My Highest Self said hire someone to make dinners

I feel like such a Susie homemaker lately. I made homemade plantain chips, brownies, nice cream, teas, hummus, and stuffed dates for the first time ever. I made my daughter’s birthday cake. Actually, we made it together which was even better! I made her birthday snack for school too. You know why? It’s all because I hired someone to make our dinners 4 to 5 nights per week. Yes, stick with me… I hired a cook, and it made me a Susie Homemaker.

Initially, part of me felt like a failure as a mother because I wanted to make my family healthy, delicious meals, but it just wasn’t working. (Yes, rationally I know that’s extremely extreme, but that’s how a small part of me felt.)

The reality was that, for me, making dinners was stressful. Someone always hated it, and I took that personally. It made a big mess. At a minimum, it took me away from time with my family. At worst, it made me think they were ungrateful stinkers. Yeah, I said it.

Frequently, I wasn’t able to stay regulated and hold my frequency, and as I have learned, holding my frequency is my number one job – far and away more important than anything else.

I knew there was a better way to feed myself and my family. So, I checked in with my Highest Self. Sure enough, she said it would be in our greatest alignment to hire a cook. I did it, and I don’t regret it for a second.

There have been so many benefits, expected and unexpected:

  • We went from eating out about 4 times per week to about 2 times per week, which leads me to my second point …
  • It’s healthy! I gave our chef Jasmine very specific guidance to make Medical Medium meals (vegan, gluten free, anti-inflammatory, etc), and it didn’t phase her a bit. She has been incredible!
  • We aren’t spending more money. First, because we aren’t eating at restaurants as much. Second, because our grocery bills are a bit lower. Jasmine doesn’t order veggie burgers and soy-free tofu like we did. She makes them!
  • I have time and energy to make the things I want to make, including the things that are important to me and my family, like celebratory desserts! Also juices, smoothies, and healthy snacks – the fun stuff.
  • Both of my kids are more adventurous eaters now. The pickier one has been exposed to all sorts of foods that I don’t even know how to pronounce (moustaka, anyone?). She’s beginning to trust that even food she’s not familiar with can be good!
  • And most importantly, my nervous system is better regulated. It’s less stressful at dinner time because I just pop in something Jasmine made to heat for 15 minutes.

Update: After I dehydrated the plantain chips above, I thought I’d crisp them up a tiny bit more in the oven. I burnt them to total char! And that was my reminder that we’re all just doing our best here.
